Amyra Week 3: "Where You Lead, I Will Follow"

Five minutes into the “Pilot” episode of Gilmore Girls, and I was hooked. I was transported to Luke’s Diner, sipping on a hot cup of coffee with a plate of pumpkin pancakes and cinnamon butter to warm me up from the crisp autumn air. Its rapid dialogue and cozy atmosphere have become my second home that I revisit as soon as the leaves change their colors. Every quirky character felt like a neighbor: Kirk, the man with a million jobs; Sookie, the clumsy yet brilliant chef; and Michel, whose snippy retorts hilariously contrasted his job as the inn’s concierge.

I have watched every episode of this beloved show countless times—to the point where I have every plotline memorized! Despite this, it never bores me and I can still laugh at the same jokes with every rewatch. The town of Stars Hollow’s close-knit community is my perfect escape from the perils of school and everyday life.

Gilmore Girls focuses on the relationships between the three women who share the Gilmore name: Lorelai Gilmore, a young single mother, her teenage daughter, Rory, and Emily Gilmore, Lorelai’s controlling mother. Lorelai’s wit and her fierce self-reliance are a reflection of my own confidence, especially her authenticity to her values (and often, her stubbornness). Rory’s “love for learning,” as her mother describes it, inspires me to follow in her footsteps and romanticize studying. And, Emily’s attention to detail reminds me of my own strive for perfection in every aspect of my life—from academics to my drawings.

“Where You Lead” is the show’s iconic theme song, narrating the bond between Rory and Lorelai as one between best friends. Their dynamic is similar to my relationship with my mother: filled with unconditional support and inside jokes. The Lorelai Gilmore to my Rory has always embodied that same warmth and comfort, and she will forever be my role model.

Though I love Gilmore Girls for its small-town charm, my favorite part is my connection to the characters and the comfort it provides on the most hectic days.

  1. Hi Amyra! I’ve never watched Gilmore Girls before, but I’ve definitely seen it while scrolling through all the shows to find something to watch. Similar to you, I love connecting with the characters in the show because I think it makes it so much more engaging. I also love the feeling of being absolutely obsessed with a show, since it provides me with so much comfort. Every time I’m stressed, I can just think of the show, and I’ll be less stressed. I don’t watch many American TV shows, but the one I did watch (and rewatch) was Brooklyn 99. I’ve watched this show so many times, especially the first few seasons. It’s so funny, and I loved watching it with my sister. You should definitely check it out if you haven’t already. Gilmore Girls also sounds interesting, so I’ll add it to my watchlist and hopefully watch it in the near future.

  2. Hi Amyra! I've never really watched any live action series like this as I'm usually on Youtube watching video essays. Although I have made one exception which sounded very similar to the situation you're describing now. This series I'm referring to is the notorious Hazbin Hotel, the Disney-esque show for more queer adult audiences. Much of what you've described in this blog reminded me of my own experiences with Hazbin Hotel. I stumbled on this pilot and it got me hooked, only I had to wait ~7 years for the first season to finally arrive. I've rewatched the first season countless times as preparation for the second season, also memorizing every plot point of the show. Reading this blog was a blast from the past for me and maybe I may rewatch Hazbin Hotel again. Speaking of Hazbin Hotel, their sister series is coming out with their 3rd season soon. I may have a lot of rewatching to do.

  3. Hey Amyra, I’ve never actually watched Gilmore Girls myself, but your descriptions of it make it truly seem interesting and really helped me picture the show itself. During the pandemic, my sister would always watch Gilmore Girls on Netflix, and she did so on my profile. So for nearly 5 months, everything in my suggested shows would be something along the lines of Gilmore Girls, the complete opposite of the action and sci-fi TV shows that I had wanted to watch at the time. Because of this, I truly hated Gilmore Girls with an undying passion. However, in recent times, I have moved into a phase of shows from the 2000s and this show does appear to fall under that category. Your descriptions of the Gilmore family and the way you associated yourself with the storyline and even remembered it fully shows how much of an impact it had on you, and I definitely will try my best to watch it.

  4. Hi Amyra! Your blog immediately reminded me of my own annual Gilmore Girls rewatch, especially during the fall when the changing leaves, crisp air and the atmosphere make the show feel even more comforting. I love how you vividly described Stars Hollow as your "second home" because the tone has such cozy and nostalgic charm that connects you to it. I also loved your discussion of Rory and Lorelai's relationship and compare that to the bond you and you mom share. I relate to this because my mom was the one that introduced me to the show. So thank you! for mentioning one of my favorite ways to decompress, a coffee and a Gilmore Girl's episode can go a long way.
